LESSONS

Lessons

Music 101 currently offers private lessons for the beginner as well as
advanced student in piano, guitar, voice, and electric bass. Our
staff is composed of professional musicians, who in addition to
performing regularly, also hold, at minimum, undergraduate degrees in
music performance or education. All new students begin at a half hour
lesson which meets on a weekly basis. Lesson times may be extended at
the discretion of the instructor. The minimum age requirements we use
for each instrument are as follows:

Piano - Age 5
Guitar - Age 6
Voice - Age 10

Students can expect a traditional approach to music education. Reading music, rhythm, proper technique, and theory are a part of every lesson. It is our expectation that even the youngest of students is able to practice on a regular basis at home. Clear assignments will be given at each lesson. By the use of practice calendars, progress cards, and incentives, our instructors monitor each students education. Parents of young students are always
encouraged to speak with their instructor during the student's lesson time regarding assignments, practice expectations, etc. At the same time, we do understand the importance of working on music that interests a student. This is especially true of teen/adult students or those with a prior musical background. We have found it possible
to still work with the fundamentals of music reading, theory, etc. in the context of numerous styles of music. Many of our instructors are open to work on music suggested by the student, as long as it is at an attainable level.

Piano students need to have either a keyboard or piano to practice on at home. When purchasing a keyboard for a beginning student, please keep in mind that the keys should be a standard size and not smaller, it should have at least 60 keys, and when possible, weighted action is helpful. Please feel free to email or call the studio with any questions regarding the purchase or rental of a piano. Guitar students can choose to study either acoustic or electric guitar. Amplifiers are provided at lessons and students are not required to bring them.
